Background Information

Acyl-CoA: cholesterolacyltransferase (ACAT) is an in tracellular membrane-bound enzyme that uses cholesterol and long chain fatty acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) as substrates to produce cholesteryl esters. Two isoforms of the enzyme ACAT, i.e., ACAT1 and ACAT2, are known to exist. ACAT2, which is expressed in liver and intestine cells, has been found to play an important role in intracellular cholesterol homeostasis and univariate survival analyses have shown that ACAT2 expression is associated with a poor clear cell renal cell carcinoma associated survival.
