UCHL1/PGP9.5 Antibody

UCHL1 (Ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase isozyme L1) is known under several names, such as neuron cytoplasmic protein 9.5, PGP9.5, or PARK5.

It is a member of a gene family whose products hydrolyze small C-terminal adducts of ubiquitin to generate the ubiquitin monomer. This function is also important to remove ubiquitin from partially degraded proteins. Several different diseases are associated with the dysfunction of the ubiquitin pathway.

The pan neuronal-marker UCHL1/PGP9.5

The expression of UCHL1/ PGP9.5 is highly specific for neurons and cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system and their tumors [1, 2]. To understand the development and function of the nervous system, precise visualization of the neuronal compartments is needed. UCHL1 specifically labels the neuronal cell body and axon of the central and peripheral neural system [3].

This protein is present in brain tissue at concentrations at least 50 times greater than in other organs and is a major protein component of neuronal cytoplasm [4]. UCHL1/ PGP9.5 is also a Parkinson's disease susceptibility gene [5].

UCHL1/PGP9.5 as a tumor marker

Recent studies also investigate the relationship between UCHL1/ PGP9.5 and many different human cancer types. PGP9.5 was reported to be overexpressed in a subset of human cancers, such as colorectal, pancreatic, lung, or gallbladder cancer [6-9]. However, it remains unclear how UCHL1/ PGP9.5 is involved in the tumorigenic pathway.
