Background Information
Transforming acidic coiled-coil (TACC) proteins are a conserved family of centrosome- and microtubule-interacting proteins that are implicated in cancer. TACC2, also known as anti-zuai-1 (AZU-1), was abundantly expressed in non- and premalignant cells and tissues but was appreciably reduced in breast tumor cell types and in primary tumors, thus TACC2 may act as a tumor suppressor protein and represent a tumor progression marker. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Chromosome segregation in mitosis is orchestrated by dynamic interaction between spindle microtubule and the kinetochore. Centrosomal TACC2 plays a role in organizing centrosomal microtubules and is required for mitotic spindle maintenance.
