Background Information
CoREST (corepressor of repressor element-1-silencing transcription factor) is a chromatin- modifying complex that was first identified as a regulator of neuronal gene expression, having a essential role in neuronal differentiation (PMID:10449787). The CoREST complex is recruited by REST (RE1-silencing transcription factor) that recognizes the 21-nucleotide RE-1 sequence in the promoter of more than 1,700 different target genes in human and mouse (PMID:15240883). HMGB20B is one component of the CoREST complex, which mediates chromatin remodeling and repression of specific genes involved in neuronal differentiation through modulation of chromatin structure (PMID:19997604). The predicted molecular weight of the HMG20B protein is 36 kDa, while the molecular weight detected in the literature is approximately 40 kDa by SDS-PAGE (PMID: 36171271).
