Background
CD44 is a cell surface adhesion receptor that plays a crucial role in various biological processes, including cell-cell interactions, cell-matrix adhesion, cell migration, and signaling. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronan (HA) and has been implicated in several other ligand interactions, including osteopontin (OPN), collagens, and matrix metalloproteinases. CD44 is highly expressed in many cancers and is known to regulate metastasis by interacting with extracellular matrix ligands, promoting migration and invasion processes involved in metastases. It also has been identified as a marker for cancer stem cells and immune cells.
