Background
IL-8 is a chemoattractant cytokine that signals through the CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors to attract and activate neutrophils to sites of inflammation. It is secreted by multiple types of cells, including monocytes, neutrophils, tumor, epithelial, endothelial, and fibroblasts. IL-8 signaling activates downstream pathways that promote cell survival, proliferation, and cell invasiveness. As such, IL-8 has been linked to the promotion of angiogenesis, immunosuppressive cell recruitment, and EMT transition in several cancer types. Recent studies also indicate that IL-8 can serve as a marker for COVID-19 disease progression (PMID: 22235381, 18980965, 26548401, 33584733).
